RAF Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike against an hidden munitions depot in Syria employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a number of approach shafts providing entry to the facility... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any harm to civilians in the attack conducted Saturday night and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as Daesh - enforced extremist governance over parts of Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

UK warplanes have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out dangerous terrorists who threaten our way of life, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and influential overseas."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "major assault" targeting IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. says IS still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
